Fall Conference 2021
What Now, What Next?
October 19-20, 2021
The Mezzanine Theatre at the A.R.T./New York Theatres, 502 West 53rd Street, New York, NY 10019
…and online!
NAMT welcomed members back to New York for the 2021 Fall Conference, What Now, What Next. The Conference was also presented online, allowing members to participate fully in all Conference sessions, networking, meeting Festival writers and more, from anywhere! As our theatres start to reopen, how are we applying what we’ve learned from this period of assessment and hardship? How are we listening to our artistic communities and earning their trust? How do we want to challenge our audiences with new stories and new ways of thinking? How can we all rebuild and grow together?
If you registered for the Fall Conference (either in-person or online), click here to go to Socio, our hybrid event platform, and access all of the Conference materials including attendee contacts, speaker bios, handouts, slides, connections made during the event, and more. Socio will be active at least through Spring, 2023. If you didn’t use Socio during the event, you can still set up your account using the email address you used to register with us.

Online attendees: The virtual space will be open, too! Start chatting and posting, join a video room, and get set up for the day. Everyone: Make sure you have the Socio app on your phone so you can make connections with your fellow attendees (wherever they are) and get important Conference and Festival info all week. 12:00 - 12:15 pm | Welcome Remarks & Orientation The Mezzanine and Socio |
12:15 - 1:00 pm | Keynote Conversation: Adam Gwon, Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty and Emily Gardner Xu Hall The Mezzanine and Socio Three generations of musical theatre writers — who have mentored or been mentored by each other and collaborated in the past — will discuss teaching, learning and how to share this art form we all love, as well their hopes for the future of the field. |
1:00 - 2:30 pm | Lunch On your own In-person attendees, check the Socio app for restaurant recommendations! (This link will start working the week before the conference after your Socio registration has been activated.) |
2:30 - 3:30 pm | What Now, What Next? The Mezzanine and Socio The last year and a half has been a time not only of struggle and soul-searching but also of innovation and reinvention. As we begin to rebuild and reopen, what do we want “the new normal” to look like? What don’t we want it to look like? Let’s take some time to remember why we got into theatre in the first place and imagine the industry, art form, audiences and community we want to see going forward. Moderated by Betsy King Militello (NAMT), with Thembi Duncan (Shea’s Performing Arts Center), Susanna Gellert (Weston Playhouse), Melissa Livingston (Lake Dillon Theatre Company) and Natasha Sinha (Playwrights Horizons) |
3:45 - 5:15 pm | How to Drive EDI Goals in an Uncertain Time The Mezzanine and Socio An interactive, 90-minute workshop to help participants deepen their analysis, develop further understanding and grow in learning around issues of racism, bias, and injustice while remaining energized in the midst of the internal and collective work. We will create a brave environment that allows participants to feel safe to share and engage, both in-person and online, and ensure that space is made for participants to share their unfiltered experiences and concerns. The Woke Coach: Seena Hodges and Ansa Akyea

Wednesday, October 20, 2021 (All times ET)
10:15 am - 12:00 pm | In-Person Check-In & Coffee The Mezzanine Theatre at A.R.T./New York Theatres In-person attendees: Don’t forget your badge and join us for coffee and reunions with old friends — and meet new ones! Coffee today is sponsored by ArtLab and The 5th Avenue Theatre. |
10:45 - 11:45 am | Early Bird Session: From Reopening to Renaissance: Maximizing Attendance this Season The Mezzanine and Socio We’ve learned many things over the last year, especially the importance of relationships and keeping connections with patrons active. As Theatres reopen doors and return to performances with live audiences, it is time to act on what we’ve learned. Join TRG Arts for a hands-on workshop to explore how to best reactivate and retain audiences during this important 2021-22 season. The session will feature data insights, case studies, and activities to help ensure this season isn’t just about reopening, but is your relationship renaissance. |
12:00 - 1:00 pm | Real Talk for the Future of Musicals The Mezzanine and Socio If you could snap your fingers and change the way that new musicals are developed, how would you change things? A panel discussion about creating equitable, brave spaces for new musical development. The specific focus of this session has been determined by the panelists without a brief from the NAMT staff or planning committee, creating a unique opportunity to hear a group of Global Majority leaders in our industry exploring a subject on their own terms. All are welcome! Moderated by Orlando Morales (The 5th Avenue Theatre), with Ray Hogg (The Musical Theatre Company), Keena Redding (Horizon Theatre Company) and Blair Russell (Show Shepherd) |
1:00 - 2:30 pm | Lunch On your own In-person attendees, check the Socio app for restaurant recommendations! (This link will start working the week before the conference after your Socio registration has been activated.) |
2:30 - 3:30 pm | Rebuilding Community The Mezzanine and Socio How do we welcome artists, staff and audiences back into our theatres after a period that has been traumatic for many? What are we doing differently, and how are we communicating those changes? How are we listening? Moderated by Paige Price (Philadelphia Theatre Company), with Jesse Cameron Alick (The Vineyard Theatre and The Sundance Institute), Bill Berry (The 5th Avenue Theatre), and Chanel Bragg (Arizona Theatre Company) |
3:45 - 4:45 pm | How To Change the Program The Mezzanine and Socio How can we use stories to effect change? In this moment of “returning to normal,” is it better to give audiences what they know and are familiar with or use this as our chance to challenge them with new content and form? What are the dangers of catering to subscribers and donors? What are the benefits of questioning their — and our! — assumptions? How do we engage existing audiences in new programming while making the space and building the bridges to new audiences and artists? What sort of communities do we want our theatres to be and how can new musicals play a role? Moderated by Anika Chapin (Goodspeed Musicals), with Dennis Corsi (Live & In Color), John Dias (Two River Theatre), Kate Galvin (Cardinal Stage) and Eric Keen-Louie (La Jolla Playhouse). |
5:00 - 6:00 pm | What Next, What Now? The Mezzanine and Socio What will musical theatre look like in one year? Two? Ten? What innovations and tools from the time when our doors were closed do we want to keep as we move forward? How can we use technology to provide greater access to audiences and artists alike? Moderated by Sharon Fallon (Sharon Fallon Productions, Inc.), with Kwofe Coleman (The Muny), Tralen Doler (Broadway Licensing/Broadway On Demand) and Mei Ann Teo (Oregon Shakespeare Festival) |
6:00 - 6:15 pm | Closing Remarks The Mezzanine and Socio |
6:30 - 7:00 pm | Twilight Cabaret The Mezzanine and Socio Featuring Fall Conference keynote panelist Emily Gardner Xu Hall, this new work sampling will provide the perfect segue from the end of the conference to the beginning of the Festival. (Available to Fall Conference attendees in-person or online and Festival VIPs and Premiere/Select Pass holders online.) Wine & Cheese sponsored by Music Theatre International and Ogunquit Playhouse. |
Thursday, October 21, 2021 (All times ET)

We invite you to participate in the Fall Conference and Festival of New Musicals in a spirit of open-mindedness, curiosity and respect.
We want every NAMT event to be a safe, inclusive and productive environment for all participants. In that spirit, we ask you to…
- Be inclusive, actively seeking and inviting diverse perspectives
- Listen to understand
- Participate in an active and direct way, with professionalism and respect for others
- Be considerate, kind, constructive and helpful in your language and actions
- Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory or harassing behavior and language
- Respect confidentiality requests by speakers and other attendees
NAMT staff and Board may take action (up to and including expulsion with no refund and exclusion from future events) to redress disruptive, disrespectful or offensive behavior or any other actions deemed in conflict with the above guidelines.
Thank you to every NAMT community member for helping to make all of our events informative, inclusive and respectful.
COVID-19
Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine will be required for in-person entry to the Fall Conference. Guests who are under the age of 16 who are unvaccinated and those guests who are unvaccinated due to a disability will be required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of entry to the event, or a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 6 hours of entry to the event in order to attend.
Guests can display proof of vaccination (or negative test for guests under the age of 16 and those seeking reasonable accommodations due to a disability) on a smartphone or present a physical copy of their card. New York State residents, or anyone who received a COVID-19 vaccine in New York State, may present proof through the use of the Excelsior Pass (for more details, visit: https://epass.ny.gov). In addition to proof of vaccination, all guests 18 years or older must also present a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport. Guests younger than 18 may use a government-issued photo ID or school photo ID. Guests under 16 must be accompanied by an adult who meets the above requirements.
Masks are encouraged when moving around the space, when not eating or drinking.
It is essential that guests not enter the theatre if they are unwell. We will make every accommodation possible in order for both NAMT staff and attendees to feel empowered to stay home if they feel unwell. Please let us know if you are unable to attend in person and we will be happy to change your registration to online so that you may join us remotely.
We are continuing to monitor city, state and federal guidelines as we plan for the fall events. As public health conditions and the State’s guidance for public gatherings evolve, we will remain flexible and adapt to applicable health protocols.
If you do not intend to be vaccinated in time to attend our in-person events, you may join us online!
