Come From Away Gives Wing To Hope

Come From Away (Festival 2013) is currently receiving its world premiere production at member theatre La Jolla Playhouse. In The San Diego Union-Tribune, writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein talk about the genesis of the show:

It was a heartening example of warmth and humanity on a day of much darkness and despair, and Hein notes that “there’s a nice phrase everyone says out in Newfoundland that’s been associated with this story: When the world was witnessing the worst of mankind, this tiny little town was witnessing the best of it.”

Of course, you’d have a hard time convincing the townspeople that what transpired was really any big deal, the writers add.

“People in Gander say, ‘You would have done exactly the same thing — why are you even writing a play about it?” Sankoff says.
