Lisa Howard on “It Shoulda Been You”

In 2009, Lisa Howard played Jenny in It Shoulda Been You for the first time at NAMT’s 21st Annual Festival of New Musicals. She spoke with The New York Times about the role as It Shoulda Been You began previews on Broadway this week.

I definitely connect with Jenny. She’s the older sister who’s not quite as pretty, not as thin as her younger sister, and hears about it from her mother. I can relate in that way, when people — they mean well — try to tell you something about the way you look. I’ve gotten that my whole career — “If you would only lose 30 pounds, you’d have every lead on Broadway. What’s wrong with you?” …You just have to be confident in the person that you are. And sure, I guess maybe if I was a different size, my career would be different. But I’m not. And I’m really happy the way I am.
